How these peaceable and prosperous people were oppressed and persecuted, misunderstood, and badgered, beyond endurance and almost beyond honor, yet avoided war until fateful forces pushed them into it, is disclosed in sources made available to McWhorter by his Indian collaborators.

It is the Nez Perce War of 1877 which forms the major portion of the book, and, without doubt, here is the most exhaustive and thorough examination of that dramatic struggle, the last great Indian war on this continent.

It should be noted that HEAR ME, MY CHIEFS! is not an extension of YELLOW WOLF (the autobiography of one of the last surviving warriors of the Nez Perce War narrated to McWhorter), but a companion volume in which the entire story of the Nez Perce tribe is unfolded in an inclusive work of inestimable value.

Few men knew the heart and mind of the Indian so thouroughly as L.V. McWhorter, whose devotion to the Nez Perces did not rest in mere appreciation; but took permanent form by recording, through years of patient questioning, their legends and history. When Lucullus McWhorter died in 1944, the task was completed by his son, assisted by members of the staff of the State College of Washington.

This is not just a glorified story of Indians but one which sifts the evidence to find the truth. Wherever words were written concerning the Nez Perces, McWhorter ferreted them out. He contrasted the reminiscences of generals, missionaries, and pioneers with the witness of the Indians, and brought together material accumulated from files of newspapers, old journals, and letters.

Written without dullness, for the richness of the material is derived largely from the quoted and clearly beautiful expressions of the Indian friends of McWhorter, HEAR ME, MY CHIEFS! is a book for the historian, and also for the general reader, who will find here the only complete and definitive record of the Nez Perce Indians with the puzzling aspects of the Nez Perce War of 1877 clarified by the Indians themselves.

About the Author
Lucullus Virgil McWhorter was born in 1860 ina log cabin in what is now West Virginia. From his earliest childhood, he was interested in everything pertaining to Indians. He died in 1944 and, with the help of his son V.O. McWhorter this compilation of his last unfinished manuscript was published in 1952.

About the Author
Gore Vidal was born in 1925 at the United States Military Academy at West Point. His first novel, Williwaw, written when he was nineteen years old and serving in the Army, appeared in the spring of 1946. Since then he has written twenty-three novels, five plays, many screenplays, short stories, well over two hundred essays, and a memoir.Jay Parini (born 1948) is an American writer and academic. Among his works of fiction and criticism are The Last Station, John Steinbeck, and Benjamin's Crossing. Parini is Gore Vidal's literary executor and a regular contributor to various journals and newspapers, including The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Guardian (U.K.). In 1976, he cofounded New England Review, and he has taught at Middlebury College since 1982. He lives in Vermont.

About the Author
Michael Jacobs is Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Health and Community Studies, Bournemouth University, having worked for many years at Leicester University. He is is a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, a psychodynamic psychotherapist registered with UKCP. His publications on psychodynamic counselling and therapy are used as key texts on many training courses.

David Edwards has taught at Rhodes University in South Africa since 1972 and has a longstanding interest in humanistic and transpersonal psychotherapy. He offers postgraduate courses in transpersonal psychology and the expressive arts in therapy. He is also a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and currently teaches and supervises trainee clinical psychologists in cognitive therapy and group therapy, and supervises research on clinical applications of cognitive therapy.

This book is well-illustrated and has very readable, qualitative, and often quantitative descriptions of many topics. It does not go into great detail on many of the advanced or newer topics it mentions. This is an introductory book. Many people learn a topic best by first reading a semi-quantitative account, and then going on to higher-level detailed graduate level books or papers if they find the effort on that topic is warranted. For example, if one see "whispering gallery mode" in some article, and wants to know more, one can find a nice figure and a brief qualitative description in this book. Now, the description in the book is not enough to design anything, but it is adequate for a reader to have some understanding and decide if he or she needs or wants to know more about this topic. Let's give the authors credit for even including such topics - how many books do you have that even mention whispering gallery modes? Similar comments can be made about APDs using thin multiplication regions to lower noise, or the use of strain in semiconductor lasers to improve performance, etc. I think this book is very useful as an undergraduate text or as the first (but not final) book you will want to consult when studying a new topic.

Needed for an Optics & Photonics Engineering elective.

Simply great book. A must read for every students who start their career in Photonics & Optics.

Awesome and fun

As everyone has mentioned the book is a great reference book but absolutely terrible as a textbook especially for an introductory course into photonics. There are next to NO EXAMPLES in the book as it is almost entirely theory based with no applicational references. The number of students who learn by a pure theory method for instruction is next to none. Unfortunately trying to get the solution manual that accompanies the book is next to impossible whether from legitimate or illegitimate means. As my instructor does not give problems from the book using the solutions manual as a reference would be ideal. Honestly I wanted to give this book a zero due its disorganization and lack of examples however because it does have good reference material I couldn't. As a student I DO NOT recommend this book however as someone looking to use it on a supplemental basis to another course/project I can and do recommend it. That being said whether the price is worth it for a supplemental source is debatable.

If you are in the field of optics or biomedical optics, there are three to four books which would be the most essential to own. The is one of them. This book is comprehensive, dealing with all the most critical areas in field, yet easy to read. It is either outstanding in understanding the most basic concepts, yet a phenomenal reference on the derivations of relationships whose origin is left to the imagination in most textbooks. This is a must buy.

I purchased this book as a text for a grad level optics course. The book covers a very broad range of material, however, there is a shortage of examples and most of the problems are geared towards proving concepts rather than demonstrating applications.

I purchased this book and so did a friend of mine from the same supplier. His was printed in the states and mine was printed in Bangladesh. My textbook was over 1.5 times bulkier/thicker/heavier than the U.S. version, with cheap glossy paper and different page numbers. The binding on mine was flimsy and did not hold up to a semester's use. The binding is completely off, very cheap!! However the one my friend purchased is holding up fine, so be sure to ask the supplier where the book was printed before purchasing!!Now for the content:The book is definitely a reference. There are no illustrative examples and condenses entire subjects/books into a single sub chapter. Overall, this book would be great to keep on your desk for a quick reference or to refresh your memory, but I would not recommend this to learn from.
