About the Author
Francisco Laguna Correa creció en el centro de la Ciudad de México durante los ochentas. La Huelga General de la UNAM de 1999 hizo que interrumpiera sus estudios en la Prepa 3, pero en lugar de unirse a los huelguistas, se fue a vivir a Ciudad Hidalgo, Michoacán, donde algunas veces trabajó recogiendo leña, vendiendo abarrotes en un tianguis y cargando pacas de avena. En Michoacán, cobró consciencia social de las dificultades vitales y económicas que viven los trabajadores del campo mexicano y los inmigrantes mexicanos en Estados Unidos. En 2001, entró a estudiar a la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), en CU, pero dejó la carrera de Lengua y Literaturas Hispánicas para redactar informes para Volkswagen por cuarenta pesos al día. La precariedad laboral y el desencanto por la UNAM lo obligaron a emigrar fuera del Distrito Federal y posteriormente fuera de México. Tras varios años de ejercer oficios diversos en México, Europa y Estados Unidos, terminó sus estudios de licenciatura en la Portland State University. En Portland, Oregón, trabajó en el distrito escolar como maestro de inglés como segunda lengua (ESL) con niños migrantes de kínder y primaria. Después estudió tres maestrías y en 2016 recibió el título de doctor (Ph.D.) por parte de la University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Ha sido docente y becario en la University of Pittsburgh, y en la actualidad es profesor visitante en High Point University. Vive en la ciudad de High Point junto a su esposa Tessa, quien también es docente universitaria. Cuando no escribe, le gusta sembrar betabeles y hierbas de olor.

Given that the goal of this book is to impart upon the reading a sense of understanding and knowledge about basic ideas of military theorist von Clausewitz, I can only say that this book hit its mark in brilliant fashion.Short, concise, yet filled to the brim with information. I particularly enjoyed how author Mr. Howard set a chapter on "Clausewitz in his time" wherein we see the thinking of the day, the atmosphere in which Clausewitz 'thought,' and so forth. This really set the basis for which one can understand Clausewitz further. I also liked the chapter on the legacy of Clausewitz in which Mr. Howard presents various criticisms of Clausewitz's ideas, and then proceeds to counter them.Overall a must read for all those who are interested in understanding military endeavors- historical or current- which, if you are reading this, then it's safe to say you are in fact interested. Enjoy!

I give this book 5 stars for its thorough introduction to Clausewitz and his opus "On war".The book is well-structured and presents Clausewitz' ideas in a informative way with a good balance of trivia, facts and well founded analyses and interpretations, while resisting the temptation to bore the reader with nerdy details. With this introduction in hand, I feel safe on embarking on a full reading of On War.

This is more than a crib book - it places Clausewitz in context as well as drawing out his more important lessons. Having read the whole book at a junior Staff College course many years ago, I found myself in a unit with officers all actively engaged in the study of the original book. This little volume allowed me to converse on many points I'd long since forgotten. Highly recommended for all military officers.

Michael Howard was the co-editor of the 1976 translation of Clausewitz's famous book on War. In this 'Very Short Introduction' Howard goes through all the major thoughts of Clausewitz, which go beyond the more widely read book one.

Good choice for military theorists and enthusiast. Beware that the content was written some time ago and writing style may be difficult for some to consume and deconstruct. Suitable for the progressing novice into deeper military strategic material, specific to military warfare and less abstract than malleable and adaptive doctrines like Sun Tzu's Art of War.

I'm in a grad course where a majority of the students are military and therefore well-schooled and knowledgable on Clausewitz's theory/book "On War." Although this is not a substitute for reading Clausewitz's original work, it is a solid and useful introduction that gives context and insight into why Clausewitz wrote what he did and the essence/relevance of his work. (At 80 pages, this "Intro" is short enough/worthy enough to read prior to any discussion or dialogue on Clausewitz's theory of war.)

An excellent summation of Clausewitz's masterpiece "ON War". A highly recommended introduction to the man's genius. Get it and read it, and you will be amply rewarded, and pleased you did.

A very narrow synopsis of "On War" by Clausewitz. Good for quick review but not useful for analysis which would be the reason for reading Clausewitz.

Rachel's account of her years-long struggle with anorexia nervosa is both horrifying and hopeful. Told with searing honesty and brave insight, it dispels the myth of anorexia being the result of adolescent dieting "gone too far," or a teenager's attempt to look like a supermodel. Rachel is quite succinct in her explanations of what was going through her mind when her anorexia was developing, and her bid for control over a world that was perplexing and sometimes hostile towards her as she was growing up. This book is a story of one woman's experience with anorexia. Beginning at age eight, Rachel finds that one thing she can control in her life is food. I was shocked that she became an anorexic at such a young age. Throughout this story of starvation, intervention, relapse, and attempted recovery, Rachel's story will pull at your heartstrings. It doesn't pull punches or try to paint this disease in a rosy light. Instead, the huge and ongoing struggle to control her weight, understand how she should act in any situation, and to be a successful actor in musical theatre is bluntly and honestly revealed. This book really opened my eyes to why some people with anorexia don't eat, and how hard the struggle to overcome this problem is. I highly recommend this book to anyone who may know someone who they are concerned about having anorexia, and I recommend it to parents, especially parents of girls who have a hard time fitting in at school and who might make the choice of controlling their food intake in order to have control over some area in their lives.This book will really open your eyes to the problem with anorexia. Rachel's reason for being anorexic was not the current view of the perfect woman being extremely thin, but I believe that is one of the reasons why many girls and young women becoming anorexic. I hope that if you have daughters who are overly concerned about their body size and weight, you will be able to get them help.

As a once chubby kid who grew up being told one can never be too thin, this book helped me to better understand my own short bout with excessive dieting, and my continued desires for perfection. Ms. Richards bares her soul, detailing the not-so-pretty details of her long battle with anorexia, and her emotional and physical struggle to move her life away from the clutches of the disease. Hungry for Life is the interesting tale of a troubled child's evolution to a resolved young woman, and is not just for those who have a curiosity or questions about anorexia. Her story is compelling, bold and totally relatable to all. The research section at the end of the book is also incredibly interesting. Definitely a recommended read.

Hungry For Life is a very compelling read. In today's "Foodie- culture society, it is hard to not be at least a little food centered. But this memoir goes far beyond what current trends address. This story really speaks to those of us who have been obsessed with food from as far back as our memory exists. Although my journey takes me in the opposite direction which has lead to life long morbid obesity, the triggers and feelings are really the same. I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone who has any type of issue with food and control. This book is a must read, both for sufferers & those who are in their lives.

When I started reading this book I was very annoyed with the lead, I felt she was extremely whiny and wasn’t sure if I would be able to make it through an entire book of that...but I did and I am glad I did. Once she began growing up and became more aware of herself there were moments when I put the book down and sat in quiet reflection. She has a way of articulating certain things that provoked ‘Aha’ moments in me and I really appreciated that. It illicited feelings of solidarity and removed me from a certain loneliness that I hadn’t realized was there. I appreciated this book. There were moments where I struggled wanting to read it but there are gems within it.

This book was a page turner for me. I identified with so much of it. Following Rachel's story was informative and it was surprising to see how many of the same traits I possessed as a child while battling an eating disorder. Anyone who may know someone with an eating disorder should read this and learn through her personal accounts and insights. It may make the whole process a little less confusing and teach family and friends how to approach people going through this type of illness.

This is a very important book. I learned so much from Rachel's story. I have a friend who is dealing with this in the family. It was good seeing it from the perspective of the patient. It takes years of work to help. I highly recommend this book. If all it does is help you understand this illness and know you are not alone.
